The VB Game Development Community

=========================================================

When I came across this post that Voodoo VB had a new "columns" section, I just had to contribute to it.

The first articles were mainly about the state of the community:

"Is it falling appart?
Will everyone turn to the dark side of the force aka. C++?
Will Superman save the world?
Join us on our next episode of..."

Mmm, what was I'm talking about again? Oh, yes I wanted to state my opinion about the community. First of all here are some facts:
-A community is a good thing
-Everyone is pleased with it
-Almost everyone wants to contribute to it

As a result of these facts I've seen the following development: Everyone starts his own site.

"That's good!", you say. "lot's of new tutorials!"

However, except for the new site by Jack, most of these sites don't have much tutorials. They do have a good design, a msgboard, a links section, and perhaps a game or 2. And at first they look very promissing but only a few are strong enough to survive.

I, myself have contributed to this development by starting the site: "VBScene" a while back. At first it looked promissing, 'cause it was my holiday and I had much time to update. But after a while school started. Result: less frequent updates, and lately because of my work on WildWest...no updates.

"So what are you trying to say? That you're a lowsy webdesigner uncapable of updating your site once in a while?"

No, ofcourse not. What I mean is: perhaps it would be better if people who wanted to write a tutorial would send it to one of the large existing websites. So they wouldn't have to update a site if they didn't have the time.

If everyone would do that this would result in a few sites growing extremely large. Some people say: I don't like sites, which are that large...they don't have a 'community feel'. Well, I would like to ask those people: "Have you never read one of Jacks tutorials?" "Would you mind if Lucky had 2000 tutorials in stead of 100?" "Would you like to read 20 columns written by Tristan?"

Ok, perhaps that last one isn't a good example...but my opinion is clear: Combine our forces, to grow stronger!

That's what the whole community is about isn't it? It's not about webdesign, It's not about which site looks best. It's not about who has the largest dick. It's about helping your fellow VB-programmers out once in a while, and get help from them when you need it in return.

If you have a site, with only 3 visitors a day, and a few tutorials I would like you to think about this. Your site is great, your design is probably great too: but wouldn't your tutorials make more of a differance when you'd post them here? Or send them to Lucky? Or to Jack? Or to David? Or one of the other big names in this community?

This question concludes my article, I hope it got a few of you thinking.
